Who are the Bulgarians ?
Bulgarians are a slavonic tribe living on the lands of Mizia, Macedonia, Dobrudja and Trachia (today: Macedonia and Bulgaria). After fighting with the Romans, the Bulgarians managed to create their own kingdome and curch, but they were soon conquered by the Byzantians. After several decades of intermittent domination by the Byzantine Empire, Bulgaria lost its independence in the late 14th century and was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire. Turkish rule lasted until a Bulgarian national renaissance in the early 19th century. This led to a series of uprisings crushed by the Turks and the eventual attainment of independence in 1878, largely through the intervention of Russia. For a few months the new Bulgarian principality included most of historic Macedonia, but this territory was restored to the Ottoman state by the Westem powers at the Congress of Berlin in June 1878. Bulgaria became a kingdom in 1908; its borders expandcd and then contracted during the two Balkan wars (1912-1913). The desire to regain lost territory, especially Macedonia, prompted the Bul garian government to ally with the Central powers during World War I and again with the Axis powers in World War II. In 1946 Bulgaria became a republic, and since that time has been dominated by a Communist govemment closely allied with the Soviet Union.
After tha fall of the Soviet Union Bulgaria and Macedonia are independent democratic republics. The Macedonian question is still opened...

Welcome To My Site
Hello. I'm a bulgarian from Macedonia (born in Ohrid), and this website is a product of my resarch consearning the Macedonian Question. I don't want to convince you to think like this, or like that... This is just my oppinion. 21.January.1999 |
The problem ...
The problem is that the population in Macedonia has lost is heritage. It`s roots.
In 1913 when the Ottoman Empire colabsed, Macedonia had to been taken by Bulgaria. But ina The Balkan Wars Bulgaria was betreathed by her allyes, and Macedonia was taken by the Serbs and Greeks. After decades of torture and represion, the Bulgarins from Macedonia lost their Bulgarian feelings...
That is the Macedonian Question...
The words of Ivan Mihailov (The last leader of the IMRO)
There has been a Macedonian Question only since the Berlin Congress.
I have always been in the Macedonian movement, but I am a son of the Bulgarian people, as for more than a thousand years the Slavs in Macedonia have been Bulgarians.
For us a "Macedonian" nation means Yugoslavianism, and Yugoslavianism means imperialism which intends to seize Solun and parts of Bulgaria. In short, a "Macedonian" nation means the Serbian ethnic body enlarged with one million new Serbs.
Among the IMRO there is no narrow nationalism, favouring any nationality. When it defends nationalism, this means that it is against the denationalization of any nationality, whichever it may be.
In United Europe (if it should be) Macedonia must be represented by itself, and not Belgrade or Athens, or anyone else to represent her.
Ivan Mihailov (1896 - 1990), leader of the IMRO (1924 - 1934)
